Cork Marketing Partnership (CMP) today welcomed the announcement that Cork City has been named one of the 3 top cities in the world to visit in 2010.

Long recognised as the world’s top tourist guide, Lonely Planet has listed Cork  alongside such renowned international cities as Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Vancouver as a city destination not to be missed.

“This is a really major award for Cork, influential in driving visitor numbers to the City and the Region and a real boost for tourism and the economy”, said director of CMP, Cllr Des Cahill.

Cork has long been working to establish itself as a city tourism destination, the refurbishment of the city centre, the development of new visitor attractions; Blackrock Castle Observatory, Lifetime Lab and Glucksman Gallery alongside the established Cork City Gaol, Cork Museum, Crawford Gallery, St Finbarr’s Cathedral and English Market have each contributed to the creation of a strong and distinctive Cork story.

The culture of the region reflected in the performance venues in the city and the creative and innovative festivals staged throughout the year all contribute hugely to the selling power of the city.

“Cork Marketing Partnership has worked hard over the past 3 years to package and brand the Cork offer through, TV and Radio campaigns promoting summer and Christmas in Cork, the establishment of the Cork Convention Bureau which sells Cork as a business tourism destination for conferences and business meetings and the development of a portal website for the cork region www.cometocork.com, which provides a one-stop online information source for all things Cork.   The Lonely Planet designation for Cork as a top city destination will make all of our work at Cork Marketing Partnership stronger and more relevant” said Mr Michael Geary, Chairman of CMP.
