SOUTH AFRICA'S largest private electricity supplier is to invest €2 million in the opening of a base in Cork, which could eventually create up to 60 jobs.
Netelek Technology a subsidiary of Remig said Cork beat off competition from locations in Switzerland, Britain and Australia to win the investment.
Ireland was chosen because of its stable democracy, its membership of the EU and the quality of its people, according CEO Chris Bosch.
"We evaluated each location on a score sheet and Cork won hands down. Ireland is now a focus for us and it will play a key role in out future," he said.
Netelek will be based in Ballincollig and will initially employ 35 people. The company is also finalising plans to bring its call centre and back office operations to Cork which would see the creation of a further 30 jobs. This move could be finalised within two years.
Mr Bosch said the company had been loosing a lot of staff in South Africa due to political unrest in the country which was forcing people to emigrate.
"We really clicked with the people in Ireland and we are really looking forward to working there," said Mr Bosch.
Netelek said it was working with the IDA to secure the investment.
Fergal Brosnan, managing director of Berkley Recruitment, a firm also working with Netelek in the run-up to the announcement of the investment said: "We worked very closely with Remig on their entry to the region, and partnering with them on their recruitment programme is proving a very successful relationship. Their professional approach and culture are a great fit with that on offer in Ireland. "Working with Remig over the past few months in their feasibility study, and knowing the technology and cultural fit for their company, we are extremely confident that the resource pool in Cork will fulfil all Remig's expectations into the future.
"This is reflected in the people already hired for the Irish operation, who are delighted to be joining an organisation focussed on the reduction in energy usage."
