"No to spectacle, no to virtuosity ... no to seduction of spectator"
A cult figure on the international dance scene, Jèrôme Bel brings the Irish premiere of his most notorious work to Cork. Considered his signature work, The Show Must Go On is a delightfully subversive game of anticipation and expectation that blurs the line between spectator and spectacle. Provocative, ironic and anti-theatrical this production has charmed and outraged audiences around Europe and North America since debuting in 2001. Featuring 18 performers, 18 pop classics and one DJ, and music by Leonard Bernstein, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Edith Piaf, Queen and many more. Be prepared for something different.
Jérôme Bel received a Bessie Award for the performances of The Show Must Go On in New York in 2005.
“Bel‘s work is genuine, if ephemeral, it is exciting, smart and great, great fun.” DANCE EUROPE
“Provocative, cerebral and funny, this minimalist work erases the comforting distance between performer and spectator.”THE NEW YORK TIMES
Empty spaces - what are we waiting for
Abandoned places - I guess we know the score
On and on
Does anybody know what we are looking for
Another hero another mindless crime
Behind the curtain in the pantomime
Hold the line
Does anybody want to take it anymore
The show must go on
The show must go on...
Excerpts from the lyrics of The Show Must Go On by Queen
